Holocaust Memorial Highway |
|
The decision by the Michigan Legislature to name six miles of the Northwestern Highway the " Holocaust Memorial Highway " is an act of great significance. These signs will serve as a daily reminder to the public at large to remember the Holocaust and its universal lessons. The Holocaust represents a watershed in human history. Historically, nation states' priorities differ. At times the economic well being of its constituents is the national priority. When security is of particular concern security becomes the national priority.
The German government from 1939 until its defeat in 1945 made the murder of the Jewish people; men, women and children, their political and military priority. This sign and the other to come are testimonies to our government's priorities. America 's priority, these sign reminds us, are liberty and diversity. This sign tells the world that intolerance of diversity is the road to destruction. This stretch of Holocaust Memorial Highway will symbolize a road of liberty and justice for all. Our hope is that these signs on this highway will awaken our consciousness for the need of compassion and brotherhood. A highway whose destiny will lead to a better world for all of humanity.
