Memorial Book Collection
The Memorial Book Collection is the focal point of our Library. Memorial books, also known as yizkor bikher, are most often published by individuals, organizations or corporate bodies to commemorate the Jewish presence and victims of a particular location. Individual works vary in scope, language, and size, but all serve as remembrances. Their use as historical documents and genealogical tools is invaluable. With more than 1,600 titles, the HMC Library Archive has one of the largest collections of memorial books in the United States.
One may find the names of towns or areas for which the library archive has a memorial book in its collection.
Shtetlach, Towns and Regions
Our yizkor books are available for research purposes in our Library Archive. They are housed in a separate enclosure, arranged by language. They have been acquired through donations, purchasing, and via exchange. To date, the HMC Library Archive yizkor book holdings include more than 1600 individual titles.
