Bigham, born in 1913, was a major in the 738th Tank Battalion and arrived at Buchenwald just days after the camp had been liberated. He gives a detailed account of the conditions of the camp. Inmates told him stories of how they had been punished. Prisoners were required to stand until one fainted from exhaustion and was thrown into a mass grave. Other methods of torture included whippings and being suspended by hooks. Bigham maintains that he had been aware of the camps but not their conditions.
